The U.S. Department of Education’s financial aid office was hit by a phishing campaign that attempted to obtain access to student accounts at several colleges. The phishing emails were targeted at students who were due to receive refunds of financial aid, and students were invited to divulge their personal information. Hackers then modified the banking details to channel refunds to their accounts instead. The U.S. Department of Education has called on colleges and universities to adopt two-factor authentication processes.
