With the festive season approaching, security companies are cautioning consumers and online merchants of the potential surge of cyberattacks over the next two months. As consumers and online merchants gear up for the biggest online shopping season of the year, cyber criminals too are laying the groundwork to launch phishing campaigns, compromise vulnerable websites, and so on.

Some security companies have called on online merchants to pay more attention to new employees, point of sale systems, and mobile endpoints, as well as devise and improve disaster recovery plans to minimise potential consumer frustration caused by disrupted systems. Online merchants are also advised to ensure all customer data, both in storage and in transit, are protected with robust encryption, and to install the latest patches as soon as they are available.
