US Indicts Iranian Hackers For Deploying SamSam Ransomware

The United States indicted two Iranians for deploying the SamSam ransomware in a major hacking campaign and sanctioned two others for exchanging the ransom payments from Bitcoin into rials.

The United States indicted two Iranians for deploying the SamSam ransomware in a major hacking campaign and sanctioned two others for exchanging the ransom payments from Bitcoin into rials. The 34-month hacking campaign caused more than US$30 million in losses for affected hospitals, schools, companies, and government agencies, and allowed the hackers to collect more than US$6 million in ransom payments. Some of the victims included Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital, Laboratory Corporation of American Holdings, Allscripts Healthcare Solutions, Medstar Health, Nebraska Orthopaedic Hospital, and Kansas Heart Hospital.
