Public schools in the US reported 122 cybersecurity incidents in 2018, of which nearly 60% resulted in students' personal data being compromised. More than half of the data breaches are due to inadvertent disclosure by staff and unauthorised access by students while 23% can be attributed to security lapses at vendors/partners. The remaining 23% of data breaches are carried out by unknown external actors and for malicious purposes such as identity theft. Most of the reported attacks are also delivered through phishing which may eventually lead to malware outbreaks, frauds and ransomware attacks.
