A recent survey showed that UK universities are facing increased attacks from state-sponsored hackers who are targeting government-funded scientific, medical and defence research programmes. Almost half (49%) of the 75 respondents stated that their institutions were targeted daily or more than once a week, with attacks becoming more sophisticated. Majority of the respondents (97%) also felt that a successful cyber attack could damage their reputation thereby reducing their credibility and forcing their project to stop. The respondents also acknowledged the need for more robust cyber security practices to compensate for the lack of IT investment.
