The US Coast Guard (USCG) has issued a safety bulletin warning that commercial vessels are being targeted by email phishing and malware intrusion attacks. The phishing emails pretend to originate from the Port State Control authority and request for sensitive information such as the vessel’s Notice of Arrival. Some of the emails also contain malicious attachments or links that download malware designed to disrupt shipboard computer systems. Ship owners are reminded to verify the validity of the email sender before responding to unsolicited email messages.
