Misconfigured MongoDB Leaks 700,000 Customer Records
Choice Hotel, a major hospitality franchisor based in Maryland, US, has suffered a cyber incident that exposed 700,000 guest records including names, addresses and phone numbers. The data breach occurred due to a misconfigured MongoDB database, which was subsequently accessed by unauthorised third parties. The database has since been secured after notification, but the data is believed to have been exfiltrated as anonymous threat actors have left behind a ransom note, demanding 0.4 bitcoin (~$3,800) for the return of the data.
