Hundreds of dental clinics in the US have had their computers infected with ransomware after their service provider was compromised. The supply chain attack affected clinics subscribed to DDS Safe, an online data backup service for archiving medical records, insurance documents and personal information. The initial compromise cannot be determined but the Sodinokibi ransomware variant was unleashed on a remote data management software that provides the backup solution. It is believed that the service provider has paid a ransom to obtain a decryptor and is using it to restore affected data.
