A recent research has discovered that 590 medical image archive systems can be freely accessible from the Internet, which expose the medical details of 24.3 million patients in 52 countries. Besides confidential images of X-rays, CT and MRI scans, exposed information included patients’ names, dates of birth, dates of examination, the attending physician, and some medical information about the purpose of the examination. The exposed healthcare information, in the hands of cybercriminals, can lead to medical insurance fraud and identity theft.
