Schools Popular Target for Ransomware

17 – 24 September 2019

The education sector in the US has become a popular target for ransomware attacks.

The education sector in the US has become a popular target for ransomware attacks with 49 school districts and colleges infected in 2019 so far. 10 victim education institutions are added to the list in September, just after the end of the summer holidays and the start of school term. The Education sector is often perceived as a soft target that is behind the curve in terms of security and countermeasures. Education institutions are also inclined to pay a ransom since they face pressures to quickly restore affected services as ransomware attack has the potential to disrupt lesson plans or even delay the start of the academic year.
