Today’s cybercriminals rarely operate alone. They exist as different threat groups, from state-sponsored and organised crime syndicates to hacktivists, and operate within a highly interconnected ecosystem that mirrors legitimate business operations. These groups are:

Their key operating model is collaboration. The underground cyber economy thrives on subcontracting, enabling threat actors to generate multiple income streams. A single threat actor may:
- Directly target an organisation for profit (first-degree gain)
- Be subcontracted to support a larger campaign (second-degree gain), or
- Sell access to compromised environments to multiple parties via Initial Access Broker platforms.
This results in multiple attacks on businesses by different threat groups stemming from a single initial compromise. To make matters worse, attackers are not breaking through your front door, they are sneaking in through your trusted partners and the cyber supply chain.
